Some astronauts say that seeing earth out the window of the ship for the first time is underwhelming, that so many images of it have been captured and shared that it’s lost its magic. But how could this be true? Every time I see that video I am filled with limitless awe and love. The universe is so vast, yet our tiny world is so full. One little dot in space, described my some as insignificant, contains all the love, joy, passion, and sorrow of more people than I could ever know. More beauty than I could ever see. More songs than I could ever hear. More life, more death, more drops of water falling across the face of a leaf, more spiders spinning, more pieces of dust in the wind. I will never know it all, and what I know is so rich and colorful and loud and full. It’s enough. Those who dismiss our existence as inconsequential in the grand scheme of things fail to realize the impact of a single smile, touch, word, tear. They fail to realize their impact, and mine. Everything I do, every small action, every decision, has the power to change everything. That is significance to me.
